It’s that time of the month. The WORST time of the month. You know, the time when pesky licensing deals are set to expire, costing us the ability to watch some legit classics on Netflix. Don’t fret, though — there’s still time to stream these 10 unforgettable titles before they expire on July 1st.
MOVIE: Chinatown (1974)
WATCH IT BECAUSE: You just got done reading about how gritty Jack Nicholson can be and/or this is your first time ever watching Roman Polanski’s noir conspiracy masterpiece.
The New Hollywood era class just gone done celebrating its 40th anniversary last week. See Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway get super weird in Polanski’s detective crime drama.
MOVIE:Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
WATCH IT BECAUSE: You’re feeling spacey and want to watch a good, old fashioned alien flick.
Watching Close Encounters today, it’s kind of hard to believe this movie was made in 1977. The effects were so spot-on and set the perfect creepy tone for the film, everyone should see where bigger-budget contemporary alien flicks got their inspiration.
MOVIE: Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
WATCH IT BECAUSE: You’re feeling like you need some Stanley Kubrick and Peter Sellers in your life.
One of the greatest satires in the history of the genre, Kubrick masterfully blended politics, war, comedy, and stunning direction all into one incredible film.
MOVIE: Girl, Interrupted (1999)
WATCH IT BECAUSE: You want to be reminded that Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie were both cool once upon a time.
It’s the role that put Jolie on the map and won her the Oscar. James Mangold’s third feature right after Cop Land was a complete 180° career move but he managed to strike gold once again.
WATCH IT BECAUSE: Howard Stern is a comedic genius and somehow made a movie about radio funny.
“W ENNNNN B C!” Be sure to watch this cult comedy with a buddy and see Stern’s hilarious twist on the autobiography/mockumentary.
WATCH IT BECAUSE: You’re having a creative block and need some inspiration from one of the most beautifully directed films of all time.
If there’s any movie you absolutely must watch this weekend, make sure this is the one. Play the sound editor game this time around and try to listen for all the times sound designer Frank Warner edited cries of animals into the soundtrack while Jake Lamatta is in the ring.
WATCH THEM BECAUSE: You just worked out and now you’re in the mood for a Sly marathon.
Get inspired, laugh, cry, and indulge in the best of Stallone while you can because not just one, but all of the Rocky films are leaving Netflix in a week – wah!
WATCH IT BECAUSE: You want to avoid all things serious and laugh hysterically for two hours.
The only problem with watching Spaceballs is that you want to keep watching Brooks movies all day long. Here are a 2 more on Netflix : High Anxiety and Robin Hood: Men in Tights.
WATCH IT BECAUSE: You just finished Raging Bull and you’re on a Scorsese/De Niro kick.
Taxi Driver makes you appreciate the Giuliani era of New York because man, the 1970’s were nasty in the city. It’s De Niro’s most memorable role to date and it’s always shocking to see how youthful and somewhat goofy he was back in the day.
WATCH IT BECAUSE: There’s nothing like watching young Schwarzenegger on an unstoppable murder mission.
Talk about the ultimate hunt. Watch Arnold as a completely ruthless robot killer on his trek to find and destroy Sarah Connors in this 80’s action favorite.
