If I ever found myself in desperate need of life advice, I’d feel comfortable turning to writer/director Mark Duplass. Few writers mine so much humor and humanity from the wonderful, excruciating experience known as life in such a realistic, thoughtful manner. It doesn’t matter if it’s in front of the camera or behind the scenes, in television or in movies, Duplass’ artistic endeavors give a voice to the often indescribable combination of malaise, confusion, and uncertainty that perplex and exasperate us on a daily basis. His films are an entertaining reminder that while we may sometimes feel isolated, we’re never truly alone.

While many of our favorite Mark Duplass moments have taken place on the small screen (you were too beautiful for this world, Togetherness), we’re going to concentrate on the impressive array of films in which Duplass showcased his writing, acting, or directing talents. From new sensations like Blue Jay to the 2005 indie hit The Puffy Chair, we cobbled together a list featuring all your Duplass favorites.

Even if you don’t know your Hannah Takes the Stairs from Your Sister’s Sister, you’ll enjoy this handy cinematic guide of where you can find every Mark Duplass film available to stream!

1

'Blue Jay' (2016)

Mark Duplass and Sarah Paulson’s electric chemistry is on display in one of our favorite movies of 2016!

This sweet, subtle indie is an unflinchingly honest story centering around two former high-school sweethearts reflecting on their past. The emotions are visceral and the performances spectacular in this must-see gem.

'Creep' (2014)

A Mark Duplass horror film? You bet! The man knows his way around many a genre.

During our 2015 interview with Duplass and director Patrick Brice, we described Creep as “a blend of found footage, unsettling buddy comedy, and snuff reality that combines elements of a pitch-black humor while commenting on the heightened paranoia of Craigslist crimes in the digital age.”

3

'The One I Love' (2014)

I’m not going to spoil this wonderfully unique 2014 science-fiction thriller by giving away the plot because The One I Love is a film best viewed with minimal information. Audacious as it is clever, it’s one of the most enjoyable movies available to stream on any platform.

Move this film to the very top of your must-stream list.

4

'Black Rock' (2012)

The couple that creates together stays together!

Written by Duplass and directed by his frequent costar (and wife) Katie Aselton, the 2012 horror-thriller Black Rock centers on three friends (Aselton, Lake Bell, and Kate Bosworth) who reunite for a girls’ weekend on a remote island. But their fun-filled weekend soon turns into a deadly fight for survival.

Dun-dun-dunnnn.

'Safety Not Guaranteed' (2012)

Wanted: Somebody to go back in time with me. This is not a joke.

Aubrey Plaza and Mark Duplass enchant and delight in the inspirational time-travel rom com Safety Not Guaranteed. That’s right, an inspirational time-travel rom com. The premise — three magazine employees go on an assignment to interview a guy who placed a classified ad seeking a companion for time travel — is simple, but the film is a beautiful story filled with heart and humanity.

'The Do-Deca-Pentathlon' (2012)

'Jeff, Who Lives at Home' (2011)

The Duplass brothers team up to explore love, destiny, and a strained brotherly bond in the utterly delightful Jeff, Who Lives at Home.

'Your Sister's Sister' (2011)

Your Sister’s Sister offers an enjoyable new twist on an old trope.

9

'Cyrus' (2010)

So much talent is on display in 2010’s Cyrus. Written and directed by the Brothers Duplass, the film centers on a divorced man (John C. Reilly) and a single mother, Molly, (Marisa Tomei) who embark on a relationship, much to the chagrin of Molly’s adult son, Cyrus (Jonah Hill).

You’ll never hear Human League’s “Don’t You Want Me Baby” again without thinking about this film.

10

'Mars' (2010)

Written and directed by Geoff Marslett, Mars follows three astronauts on the first manned mission to the red planet after the discovery of life on Mars. Told through the style of a graphic novel, Marslett developed the film’s distinct visual style specifically for this movie.

11

'True Adolescents' (2009)

True Adolescents is kind of like the true adolescents of Duplass’ theatrical career as he goes against type and portrays a washed-up rocker in this 2009 coming-of-age story. Craig Johnson’s first feature film, the director would eventually go on to write the wonderful 2014 Bill Hader/Kristen Wiig movie The Skeleton Twins.

'Humpday' (2009)

Before Your Sister’s Sister, Lynn Shelton wrote and directed the 2009 comedy Humpday.

Duplass and Joshua Leonard star as Ben and Andrew, two former college bad boys who get involved in a mutual dare to enter an amateur porn contest and have sex with one another. Also starring Alycia Delmore, the film was awarded the “Special Jury Prize for Spirit of Independence” at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.

'Baghead' (2008)

What could possibly go wrong when four struggling actors decide to go on a weekend retreat to Big Bear and write their own screenplay? Well, for starters, what if the horror script they’re crafting begins to come true?

If you enjoyed Steve Zissis in Togetherness, you’ll love his endearing performance in Baghead.

14

'Hannah Takes the Stairs' (2007)

Written and directed by mumblecore pioneer Joe Swanberg, Hannah Takes the Stairs not only stars Duplass, but it also features Greta Gerwig in her breakout role as the romantically dissatisfied Hannah. A decade later, Duplass, Gerwig, and Swanberg would combine to create over 1,000,000 hours* of incredible indie entertainment.

'The Puffy Chair' (2005)

Chock-full of humor, heart, and Say Anything references, The Puffy Chair is the low-budget charmer that introduced many a person to the artful allure of Mark and Jay Duplass.

A simple story with complex emotions, The Puffy Chair centers on a road trip fueled by nostalgia as Duplass’ Josh plans to deliver a large purple chair to his father. Despite its low budget nature, the film still holds up and currently holds a 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
