No sooner had someone in the office mentioned that Justice League was on HBO this month, had someone else muttered aloud: “Did Justice League really need so many shots of Wonder Woman’s butt?” Lo, a debate raged.

Were there truly so many shots of Wonder Woman’s butt in Justice League? Why were they needed? Was it another example of tyrannical misogyny? And was it at all different from the cornucopia of superhero glutes on display in Marvel’s The Avengers? And who would dare disrespect the great Gal Gadot? These were the questions that zipped through Decider HQ, and I have been instructed to find answers.

I missed Justice League in theaters. I don’t know why I skipped it. I imagine I had some sort of adult thing to do like grocery shopping or being there for a friend. But I still wanted to see it. So when I finally came around to watching it on HBO this week, I kept my critical eye wide open for these mythical Wonder Woman butt shots. I examined them, considered them, and weighed them against similar objectifying shots of Justice League‘s male members (LOL, members). Though I am but one lonely wanderer in this strange land of butt shots, I believe I have some answers…

Are There Too Many Shots Of Wonder Woman’s Butt In Justice League?

What a question to ask one’s self! I suppose, like all things, it comes down to taste. I myself am not opposed to butts. (Butts are fun! I like looking at butts! I like having a butt! I like saying the word “butt!”)

However, I also think the butt demands respect. To that point, if there are exclusively shots of one person’s butt in a movie, and no one else’s, I feel like it’s indicative of some sort of grave inequity. Shouldn’t everyone’s butt be given the same attention?

So, are there too many shots of Wonder Woman’s butt in Justice League? From my eye, yes. I counted more shots of her butt than the boys’ butts, and there was an extended five second-long shot where we watch Diana walk into the Batcave, her butt always center of the frame. But does that mean there are too many shots of her butt? Again, it’s a question of taste, but I’m going to lean on the side of “Yeah, sort of.”

Wonder Woman leaps down and her skirt swings up a little, revealing her butt at bit.

Doesn’t Justice League Also Objectify The Dudes?

Yes, Justice League also includes male eye candy, though it’s mostly in the form of Jason Momoa’s Aquaman. We get to see Arthur Curry take his sweet frayed sweater off and slink shirtless into the sea. Then he swims away, fast as a missile zooming through the water. To quote early ’00s pop philosopher Paris Hilton: “That’s hot.”

Elsewhere, Clark Kent returns to this mortal coil wearing nothing but some tight pants and a mean expression on his face. That’s also hot.

And I will admit that one of the shots of Diana’s butt was a group butt shot. All the members of the team were lined up and shot from behind because I guess the butts that flex together stay together to the bitter end.

However — and this is just my opinion as a self-described “lady horndog” — Justice League skimps on the hunk factor. Once the battles begin, the boys are suited up in clunky attire that just makes them look bulky, while Diana is stuck kicking butt in a super short battle skirt (that totally rides up).

So, yeah, Justice League does give us some hot dude moments, but not enough in this lady horndog’s opinion.

Doesn’t The Avengers Also Have A Lot of Black Widow’s Butt?

Yeah, Black Widow’s butt is placed firmly in the front of the frame at least once in Marvel’s The Avengers. That said, so are all the other Avengers’ butts. In fact, the movie famously introduces its team leader, Captain America, butt-first. We close up on those glutes as he’s pounding at a sandbag. Later, we see butt shots of our heroes as they strut through the helicarrier and into battle. The message? All butts are super, and all super butts must be celebrated.

So Like Justice League Just Needs More Boy Butt Shots?

Yeah. But also…

What Really Bothers You About the Wonder Woman Butt Shots In Justice League? C’mon. Spill.

Slow Wonder Woman Butt Closeup

(sighs)

Most of the shots of Wonder Woman’s butt are shot from a low angle. It’s a stylistic choice, sure, but in conjunction with her short battle skirt, it also makes these butt shots into something more sinister. It’s the fear of every woman in a summer sundress on the subway, and it’s the purview of every creep in cinema: the dreaded upskirt shot.

Wonder Woman binds a terrorist in the lasso of truth, but the shot is framed to almost peek up her skirt.

Here’s my theory. It’s not so much an issue of how many shots of Wonder Woman’s butt are in the final Justice League cut, but the angle in which they were filmed. If you swing the camera up just a little bit, the creep factor is minimized by a thousand percent. There’s something inherently predatory about an upskirt shot, and while Justice League never fully goes there, it does occasionally come close. It wouldn’t be nearly as big an issue if Wonder Woman wasn’t wearing such a short skirt.

That is why I think people get angry about how Wonder Woman is shot in Justice League. It’s not the butt, but the angle.

I really liked Alfred’s outfits and Ezra Miller is a doll.
