The Candyman trailer dropped on Thursday morning, and with all the horrors going on in the real world at the moment, Twitter jumped at the chance to be distracting by the horrors of a fake world. This 2020 slasher film, which is set to release on June 12, is produced by Jordan Peele, which, as fans of the recent great horror films like Get Out and Us know, is a very good sign.

The film stars Watchman‘s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as a visual artist named Anthony McCoy who moves into a fabulous new condo with his girlfriend, Brianna Cartwright (Teyonah Parris). Anthony is struggling to find inspiration, so when an old man (Colman Domingo) tells Anthony about the horrific Candyman, he decides to paint him. As you might expect, that doesn’t go very well for him!

Directed by Nia DaCosta (Little Woods), Candyman is the fourth film in the Candyman film series (Candyman, Candyman, Candyman, Candyman). The first 1992 film—which was also titled Candyman—starred Tony Todd in the title role, the ghost of an artist and the son of slaves, who terrorizes a graduate student (Virginia Madsen). Todd, who also reprised the famous role for the film’s two sequels—Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh (1995) and Candyman: Day of the Dead (1999)—is back again as the Candyman. Under the wing of DaCosta and Peele, it seems like that the film will deal with race and class in a manner fit for the year 2020.

Many see the first Candyman as a classic entry in the horror genre, and while you’ll probably be able to understand the new Candyman without seeing the original, it wouldn’t hurt to have that knowledge before you see the first film. And if you’ll read on, we have some good news on that front.
