Do you need to watch Citizen Kane before you watch Mank on Netflix? The answer to that question is almost definitely a resounding “yes.”
Sorry! Yes, there are too many movies and shows to watch right now, and yes, Citizen Kane is old, in black and white, and has (unfairly, in my opinion) a reputation for being boring. But David Fincher’s Mank—a biopic of Citizen Kane screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz coming to Netflix on December 4—is essentially a two-hour homage to Orson Welles’s 1941 masterpiece, and it’s best enjoyed if you get all the references.
The good news that Citizen Kane, which is widely credited as being one of the greatest films ever made, is like, really good. Welles himself stars as Charles Foster Kane, a media mogul that Mankiewicz loosely based on William Randolph Hearst. Here’s where to watch Citizen Kane online.
WHERE TO WATCH CITIZEN KANE:
Citizen Kane is now streaming in beautiful HD quality on HBO Max, free to all HBO Max subscribers. If you’re not an HBO Max subscriber, the good news is that HBO Max offers a 7-day free trial. Otherwise, you can always pay to rent or buy Citizen Kane on iTunes, Vudu, YouTube, Google Play, Microsoft, or wherever you prefer to buy your digital content.
IS CITIZEN KANE ON NETFLIX OR HULU?
No. Citizen Kane is not currently streaming on Netflix or Hulu for regular subscribers. However, if you have a subscription to Hulu Live TV subscription, you should be able to stream Citizen Kane. You can sign up for a 7-day free trial to Hulu Live TV if you haven’t already.
