Catherine Zeta-Jones just snagged a starring role in Prodigal Son. The actress is set to appear in Season 2 of the Fox drama as Dr. Vivian Capshaw, Claremont Psychiatrics’ resident MD, the network announced today. Zeta-Jones’ upcoming role will begin in the latter half of Season 2, when she’ll share the screen with Prodigal Son lead Michael Sheen.

“In Season 2, Dr. Martin Whitley (Sheen) is assigned to infirmary duty, and Dr. Capshaw (Zeta-Jones) revels in tasking ‘The Surgeon’ to clean bedpans and mop the floor. But as Martin proves valuable in treating patients, Capshaw begins to see him in a new light…which is not a good thing,” Fox teased.

Prodigal Son, which first premiered on Fox in 2019, follows criminal profiler Malcolm Bright (Tom Payne) as he tracks down killers using the insight he developed growing up. Because Malcolm’s father is “The Surgeon” serial killer, he has a unique insight into the minds of criminals like him. The series also stars Aurora Perrineau, Lou Diamond Phillips, Frank Harts, Keiko Agena, and Bellamy Young.

Zeta-Jones’ casting news comes about a week before the Season 2 premiere of Prodigal Son, and her role on the show marks her most recent TV work since 2018’s Queen America, a Facebook Watch series in which she plays Vicki Ellis. Over the years, Zeta-Jones has starred in series like FX’s Feud: Bette and Joan, Titanic miniseries, and The Darling Buds of May. Her film work includes Chicago, Traffic, Mask of Zoro and Entrapment.

“An extraordinary talent, Catherine Zeta-Jones is the perfect foil for the brilliant Michael Sheen,” said Michael Thorn, president of entertainment at Fox Entertainment. “I can’t wait to see these two greats go head-to-head in a season that is bound to raise the bar set by an outstanding Season One.”

Prodigal Son Season 2 premieres Tuesday, Jan. 12  at 9/8c on Fox.
