Burned out on overpriced flowers and brunch? Sometimes it can be hard letting mom know exactly how important she is in your life, especially when it comes to the one holiday we’re supposed to do it best. Which is exactly why finding the perfect gift for Mother’s Day tends to be tricky.
For us, taking mom to the movies has always been a great way to celebrate our shared love of cinema (and popcorn with extra butter). And though many theaters are finally starting to welcome us back with open arms, some folks may not be ready to take the plunge. This year, it may be a better idea to pop your own corn, slop on the butter and stream her favorite flick or show in the comfort of home. And supplement the experience by buying her a companion book to fill that COVID-sized hole.
Since Mother’s Day 2021 is coming up fast on Sunday, May 9, here are our favorite books to gift mom on Amazon and Audible that have been made into movies and TV shows, perfect for Amazon Prime members who enjoy two-day delivery, Audible listeners or moms who read their eBooks on an Amazon Kindle.
'The Woman in the Window,' starts at $8
Nothing says farewell to quarantine like a good story about agoraphobia. Netflix understands this, which is why its Amy Adams-anchored psychological thriller based on this novel is getting so much attention. Of course, mom will love reading The Woman in the Window if she loves a page-turning mystery—and it may be the perfect addition to her summer book list.
'Terms of Endearment', starts at $14
With a star-studded cast featuring Shirley MacLaine and Debra Winger, with a little Jack Nicholson thrown in for testosterone’s sake, James L. Brooks adapted this Academy Award-winning film from a heart-rending book by Larry McMurtry. A Pulitzer Prize winner on its own, this novel takes a deep dive into the complicated relationship between mother and daughter, and explores all the love, laughter and yes, plenty of tears, they share as they deal with life’s challenges through the years.
'All Things Cease to Appear', starts at $11
Give mom a few chills with this thriller by Elizabeth Brundage, which was recently made into the Netflix film, Things Heard and Seen. Part haunted house, part marital strife, this fun, dark, creepy novel will keep her turning pages, all while feeling better about her everyday family life. You’re welcome.
'The Joy Luck Club', starts at $8
Asian American author Amy Tan is known for this bestselling novel which was made into a 1993 film of the same name. An epic story, it follows the lives of four sets of Chinese immigrant mothers and daughters, through the eyes of the mothers who meet to discuss their lives and loss. This Joy Luck Club allows them to air all those secrets, obsessions and misunderstandings that go along with their sacred familial relationships.
'Underground Railroad', starts at $10.25
This Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Jamaican author Colson Whitehead is a jarring, conceptual masterpiece, which imagines the Underground Railroad as a literal train system which uses conductors and engineers to shuttle men and women out of the bondage of slavery during antebellum times. Whitehead’s story is not only imminently important, but mom will appreciate that it’s also literature at its best. The book is being made into a TV series on Amazon Prime, spearheaded by Moonlight filmmaker Barry Jenkins.
'Halston', $39
The Netflix series on the rise and fall of legendary designer Halston premiers on May 14. And, if your mom, like the rest of us, is looking forward to watching gorgeous Brit Ewan McGregor put down his lightsaber and head to the sewing machine, she is going to love this fabulous coffee table book full of stunning pictures which chronicle the understated, modern glamour of this American designer who took the world by storm.
