Last night at the first White House Correspondents’ Dinner in three years, comedian Trevor Noah made some comical jokes about the media, Hollywood, Congress, President Joe Biden and his administration.
Standing just a few feet away from President Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, Noah combined political jabs with pop culture references to roast the audience as well as recent events, including the Oscars and the Grammys.
Priming the audience, Noah told everyone to “get comfortable.”
“Not too comfortable Jeffrey Toobin,” he said of course referencing the CNN legal analyst’s termination from The New Yorker for masturbating on-camera during a video-conference call with co-workers.
The audience chuckled. “No, you know what, don’t boo him you bunch of haters,” said Noah. “So what Jeffrey, you made a mistake, you whipped it out in front of your co-workers… that’s the first step to winning a Grammy for Comedy Album of the Year. You’re halfway there my friend.”
The comedian was referring to Louis C.K. who won Best Comedy Album in 2022 just a few years after his sexual misconduct scandal involving masturbation.
He then proceeded to address his newfound risk as a presenter.
“It is risky making jokes these days,” the Daily Show host told the packed and maskless crowd of around 2,500 guests. “I mean, we all saw what happened at the Oscars,” he said of Will Smith’s widely criticized and globally televised slap of Chris Rock on March 27 for a joke he made about Jada Pinkett-Smith’s haircut.
Noah then made one of his best jokes of the night.
“I’ve actually been a little worried about tonight. What if I make a really mean joke about Kellyanne Conway, and then her husband rushes up on the stage and thanks me?”
