It looks like we’ll finally find out who will be taking over Waystar RoyCo this coming season. Creator and showrunner Jesse Armstrong recently confirmed the upcoming fourth season of Succession will be its last.

In a new interview with The New Yorker, Armstrong took a refreshingly honest approach to discussing the Succession finale. He described feeling “deeply conflicted” and “sad” about the decision but explained why the writers felt it was time for the show to end.

“There’s a promise in the title of Succession. I’ve never thought this could go on forever. The end has always been kind of present in my mind,” Armstrong said. “From Season 2, I’ve been trying to think: Is it the next one, or the one after that, or is it the one after that?”

He continued, “I hope that no one ever thinks that we are outstaying our welcome—that we’re going to do a dud season, or be stretching it out.”

With 13 Emmys earned over the course of just three seasons, it’s hard to believe that Succession could even have  “a dud season.”

The HBO hit series artfully depicts the intricacies of a New York City media titan and his children who are vying for ownership of the family company. Season 4, which premieres on HBO and HBO Max March 26, will pick up after Season 3’s cliffhanger where the Roy siblings finally ended up on the same side but found themselves at odds with everyone else they thought were their allies: Logan somehow reconciled with their estranged mother, Shiv (Sarah Snook) was betrayed by her husband Tom (Matthew Macfadyen), and even Gerri (J. Smith-Cameron) seemed to turn her back on her “slime puppy” Roman (Kieran Culkin).

Though the company’s ownership is still up in the air, Armstrong claims he’s known how it should end since season 2.

Armstrong explained that he wanted to be honest about the show’s finale ahead of the next season premiere to help manage the audience’s expectations. According to the series creator, HBO has been “generous” and “would probably have done more seasons.” After seeing many shows and highly anticipated releases get prematurely canceled in 2022, it is refreshing to see a show approach its finale at its own pace.

The writer did, however, tease the possibility of a Succession universe. Season 4 will be the finale but there could be a chance for more, though the writer did not specify what that could look like. “I have caveated the end of the show, when I’ve talked to some of my collaborators, like: Maybe there’s another part of this world we could come back to, if there was an appetite?” he mused.

In the landscape of HBO shows, Succession has been one of the more dependable series for viewers. The show has released a season almost every year since its 2018 premiere, while other shows like Euphoria have taken their time, with only two seasons released since its 2019 debut.

It may be difficult to say goodbye to a show like Succession, but our questions will finally be answered: who will succeed Logan Roy as CEO of Waystar RoyCo?
