Donald Trump‘s victory over Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election has seemingly proven a Simpsons prediction wrong.
Per The New York Post, a March 2000 episode of the FOX animated comedy titled “Bart to the Future” features Lisa Simpson donning a purple suit and pearls as she becomes the first female U.S. president. Comparisons were quickly drawn between Lisa and Vice President Harris, who was also dressed in purple and pearls on President Joe Biden‘s inauguration in January 2021.
As noted by the Post, Lisa notes in the 24-year-old episode that they have “inherited quite a budget crunch from President Trump.”
After Harris took over the Democratic ticket from Biden in July, resemblances between her political trajectory and that of Veep‘s Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) were pointed out online, as well. The HBO sitcom followed Meyer, the U.S. Vice President who eventually becomes president.
According to the Associated Press, Trump was elected president on Wednesday after his win in Wisconsin. The election was called much quicker than the previous 2020 presidential election, which was called four days after election day.
Fans have long been attuned to episodes of The Simpsons that they claim have predicted the future, including in the instance of the missing submersible in June 2023. Matt Selman, the show’s executive producer and showrunner, called out a doctored image circulating online that showed Trump in a casket, alleging he would die in 2024.
“The image of Donald Trump in a coffin never appeared on The Simpsons. It is doctored,” Selman told Reuters.
