Jimmy Kimmel has been staunchly defending President Joe Biden against the “pretend outrage” he’s been facing from conservatives since he pardoned his son, Hunter Biden. But the late night host joked during a recent episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live that Hunter likely didn’t even vote for his father’s vice president, Kamala Harris, during the presidential election.
“The truth is if Kamala had won, Hunter probably wouldn’t have got a pardon,” Kimmel joked. “There’s a pretty good chance Hunter voted for Donald Trump to make sure this happened.”
In fact, Kimmel joked just ahead of the election that Hunter should “start calling Trump ‘daddy’ just to see if it sticks” in case his father didn’t end up pardoning him.
But during Wednesday’s (Dec. 4) broadcast, Kimmel defended President Biden’s decision to pardon Hunter.
“What [Biden] should have said is, ‘If I don’t, you animals are going to be prosecuting him for the rest of his life. The reason I know this is because you are currently doing it,'” Kimmel explained.
“The House has been investigating Hunter Biden since January 2023, almost two years. They still haven’t come up with anything that amounts to anything,” he continued.
Though he’s been defending President Biden, that doesn’t mean that Kimmel necessarily believes he was right to pardon Hunter, who was convicted earlier this year for buying and possessing a gun as a drug user.
He continued, “So did Biden do the right thing? No, he did not do the right thing. If my son was in this situation would I do what Joe Biden did? You’re goddamn right I would. 100%.” Kimmel’s candid confession was met with applause from the Live audience.
The Bidens have become the subject of Republican backlash, many of whom are calling President Biden out for insisting that he had no plans of pardoning his son before doing so.
But Kimmel is not buying their “pretend outrage.”
“They have to be kidding, right? Everyone who voted to let a 34-time convicted felon off the hook is very mad about Joe Biden letting his son off the hook,” he pointed out on a recent episode.
Kimmel noted that he doesn’t “necessarily disagree” with how conservatives feel about Hunter being pardoned, but he asked that critics “take a stroll through reality” and realize that Trump just appointed Charles Kushner, whom he pardoned during his presidency, as the new U.S. ambassador to France.
Kimmel also provided a long list on Wednesday’s broadcast of who Trump pardoned during his presidency, including Steve Bannon, Roger Stone and Michael Flynn, among others.
Jimmy Kimmel Live airs on weeknights at 11:35/10:35c on ABC.
