The Mummy is rising from the dead. Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin will write and direct a new Mummy film, set for release on April 17, 2026, by New Line Cinema.

The Mummy debuted in 1932, starring monster movie icon Boris Karloff. The franchise was revived in a 1999 Mummy starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. The 2001 sequel, The Mummy Returns, featured an early Dwayne Johnson performance. These movies were followed by another 2008 reboot, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, and a 2017 Mummy with Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella and Russell Crowe.

Despite its several iterations, Cronin told The Hollywood Reporter that “this will be unlike any Mummy movie you ever laid eyeballs on before.” He added, ”I’m digging deep into the earth to raise something very ancient and very frightening.”

Fans are hoping Fraser will make a cameo in the 2026 remake. “@brendan__fraser or we riot,” wrote one user on a Blumhouse Instagram announcement post. “Brendan Fraser’s Mummy is probably my favorite movie of all time,” said another.

Horror movie veterans Blumhouse and Atomic Monster will produce, along with the director’s label Doppelgängers, James Wan, Jason Blum and John Keville.

Blumhouse is no stranger to horror revivals. They produced Elizabeth MossInvisible Man, as well as the upcoming Wolfman starring Christopher Abbott.

Cronin’s previous horror film project, Evil Dead Rise, earned nearly $150 million in box office sales. The 2023 thriller has announced two spinoffs since its debut.
