Zoe Saldaña immediately burst into tears when she was announced as the winner for Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture at the 2025 Golden Globes.
And she continued crying through an emotional acceptance speech, for her role in the Netflix musical, Emilia Peréz—right up until the band started to playing her off and she begged them to give her more time.
“Wait!” Saldaña exclaimed as the music began to play her off. “Ted Sarandos, Netflix, thank you so much!”
Then, as the band kept playing, she cried, “No, stop, stop! My family! My mom is here, my sisters, my husband and my sons, I love you. You guys are everything. Thank you!”
You can understand Saldaña’s emotional response, given that this is her first-ever Golden Globe nomination and win, which is a strong indicator that she might also win the Supporting Actress Oscar, too. In Emilia Peréz, Saldaña stars as Rita, a Mexican lawyer who agrees to help a notorious drug cartel leader (played by trans actress and fellow nominee Karla Sofía Gascón) secretly transition to a new life as a woman.
As Rita, Saldaña masterfully portrayed Rita’s simultaneous guilt and pride. And if any viewers were unaware that the Star Trek actress speaks fluent Spanish, they won’t be after this film. Saldana’s speaks, sings, and chants with absolute ease.
Saldana praised her fellow cast members in her speech, as well as the French director, Jacques Audiard. “Thank you for trusting me to play Rita,” the actress said through tears. “You created rich and complex characters. And you’re so French, and chic and confident and kind. I love it!”
Saldaña was the first win of the night, and she certainly kicked off the show on a passionate note! We can’t wait to see her at the Oscars.
