‘Woman of the Hour’
If I learned one thing from Woman of the Hour, it’s that it was way too easy to be a serial killer in the ’70s. If I learned two things, though, it’s that Anna Kendrick is a skilled director with an eye for building tension and visual storytelling. Kendrick makes her directorial debut with this true crime thriller, which was written by Ian McDonald and began streaming on Netflix on Friday. Daniel Zovatto stars as real-life serial killer Rodney Alcala, who, in 1978, appeared as a winning contestant on The Dating Game amidst his California killing spree. It’s a bizarre tale worthy of a feature film, and Kendrick—who also stars as the unlucky contestant, Cheryl Bradshaw, who chose Alcala as her date—does it justice.
