Understand

[edit]

Puerto San José was founded in 1853. The port is at the end of a railway line that begins in Puerto Barrios on the Atlantic coast. Until the 1980s, Puerto San José was Guatemala's most important port.

Puerto Quetzal was built around 1980 as a container port, and within a few years it developed into the country's largest port on the Pacific coast.

In addition to the large port complex, tourism is an important economic factor due to the holiday resorts of Chulamar and Likín.
