Is it easier to stay? Is it easier to go?
I don't wanna know, oh
But I know that I'm never, ever gonna change
And you know you don't want it any other way
[Verse 1: Luke]
Why do we always gotta run away?
And we wind up in the same place
It's like we're looking for the same thing
Same thing, yeah
Yeah, do we really gotta do this now?
Right here with all your friends around
In the morning, we can work it out
Work it out
[Pre-Chorus: All, Luke]
I love you so much that I hate you
Right now, it's so hard to blame you
'Cause you're so damn beautiful
So damn beautiful
[Chorus: Luke, All]
Is it easier to stay? Is it easier to go?
I don't wanna know, oh
But I know that I'm never, ever gonna change
And you know that you're always gonna stay the same
Is it easier to stay? Is it easier to go?
I don't wanna know, oh
But I know that I'm never, ever gonna change
And you know you don't want it any other way
Every time that you say you're gonna leave
That's when you get the very best of me
You know we need it like the air we breathe
Air we breathe, yeah
[Pre-Chorus: All, Luke]
I love you so much that I hate you (Oh)
Right now, it's so hard to blame you (Oh)
'Cause you're so damn beautiful (Oh)
So damn beautiful (Oh)
[Chorus: Luke, All]
Is it easier to stay? Is it easier to go?
I don't wanna know, oh
But I know that I'm never, ever gonna change
And you know that you're always gonna stay the same
Is it easier to stay? Is it easier to go?
I don't wanna know, oh (I don't wanna know)
But I know that I'm never, ever gonna change
And you know you don't want it any other way
[Bridge: Luke]
The hardest part of all (Da-da-da-dum-da-da-da-da)
Is that we're only built to fall (Is it easier?)
Is it easier to stay? Is it easier to go?
I don't wanna know, oh (Oh)
But I know that I'm never, ever gonna change
And you know that you're always gonna stay the same (Is it easier?)
Is it easier to stay? Is it easier to go? (Yeah)
I don't wanna know, oh (Oh)
But I know that I'm never, ever gonna change
And you know you don't want it any other way
[Outro: All, Luke]
I love you so much that I hate you (Hate you)
Right now, it's so hard to blame you
'Cause you're so damn beautiful
About
“Easier” is the bass-heavy, industrial rock & new wave influenced track that marks 5 Seconds of Summers first ‘solo’ release since their June 2018 comeback album Youngblood and after they co-wrote and provided vocals on The Chainsmokers “Who Do You Love” in Februrary 2019. Vocals are handled by frontman Luke Hemmings and lyrically, the track sees the band debate whether or not to stay in a toxic relationship.
The band first teased its release by posting a 15-second-snippet of the song on their Twitter. Signifying the track’s dark nature, the snippet was accompanied by visuals of band members chained up, drowning, and in a hall of photos ridden with flames.
In an interview with Official Charts, OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder, who co-wrote the track, said he was “ecstatic” for the song’s release and that
I’ll put it this way, it has a little Nine Inch Nails in it.
The song has a hard rock feel, but with a relatively sparse arrangement. 5 Seconds of Summer told Rolling Stone it came about because there has been “a growing attention to industrial rhythm within the band.” They said that the track is “derivative of the driving drum groove” that’s heard on Nine Inch Nail’s track “Closer.” The band added that they were also inspired by dark, synth-heavy groups such as Depeche Mode and Tears for Fears.

We [wrote] with Andrew Watt, Ali Tamposi, Ryan Tedder, and Charlie Puth. This song was one of the earlier ones, [written] before we started the album. We were figuring out what we wanted to do. We were very into the New Wave stuff, that Nine Inch Nails stuff. This was the first stepping stone.
On a March 2021 Instagram livestream, drummer Ashton Irwin explained:
This song fucking goes so hard. I was obcessed with industrial music when we were making this record. I’d freshly kind of become sober from alcohol and, before that, I was just going out a lot, being at bars and listening to loud music my whole life to run away from stuff that I didn’t wanna think about. ‘“Easier” was really representative of that darkness, and that’s what I really dug about “Easier”, it had a heaviness, a weight to it that the band really needed to mature our public image.
