“Wildflower” is the last single released for 5 Seconds of Summer’s fourth studio album, CALM. The band announced the single release via Twitter, also tweeting a snippet of the song. The music video for this song was made entirely at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This is the lighter side of the album. It’s a step forward for us in that it’s not so dark—we can do this big stadium vocal but also have it be a big, positive, euphoric anthem and not be lame.
On a March 2021 Instagram livestream, drummer Ashton Irwin explained:
So, now the record starts to transform into a lighter tone. When you’re making a record, you need to realize, it’s like a big pie, but it needs to have different flavors to keep people wanting to eat the pie. So, you know, we’ve been through that first era of the record now, we’re up to track 6 and this is where we’re starting to transfer to a lighter, happier tone, for other fans that aren’t into the heavier shit. If I were to quit music today, I’d be like “man, ‘Wildflower’ was one of the best pop songs I was ever involved in.” Like, I just love this song and I think it’s just a beautiful mix of those classic, old school, eagle harmonies put into a super compact pop contemporary song that suits 2020. I love this song.
