Blackbird Lyrics

[Verse 1]
She's black and red and built just like a spy plane
Extracting information from my mind
The photographs she take save to a mainframe
For your eyes only lonely cold war time (of mine)

[Pre-Chorus 1]
Now after all the city falls just like the night or an angel does

[Chorus]
Leave me here alone to collect my things
She sees music in the terror she brings
And like a technicolor dream
The light in your eyes blinded me
From your perch you softly smiled
My Blackbird softly smiled

[Verse 2]
She's built for speed and made for keeping secrets
Stark and dark against enemy skies
From miles above the earth no one can detect her
My blackbird blows a kiss that ends mankind (goodbye)

[Pre-Chorus 2]
And all this time there is no crime of treason that she hasn't seen
[Chorus]
Leave me here alone to collect my things
She sees music in the terror she brings
And like a technicolor dream
The light in your eyes blinded me
From your perch you softly smiled
My blackbird softly smiled

[Bridge]
SR-71 Blackbird from the hell above
She's the only one
Only spy I ever loved

She's the only spy I ever loved

[Pre-Chorus]
Now after all the city falls just like the night or an angel does

[Chorus]
Leave me here alone to collect my things
She sees music in the terror she brings
And like a technicolor dream
The light in your eyes blinded me
From your perch you softly smiled
My blackbird softly smiled

[Outro]
(Whoa) (Whoa)
SR-71 Blackbird from the hell above
She's the only one
Only spy I ever loved

What did Alkaline Trio say about "Blackbird"?
Genius Answer

A bandsintown profile on the band before the album’s release gives a brief rundown of the creation of the song:

““Blackbird” is another product of the duo’s collaboration. It was one of the few instrumentals Andriano had worked out before they arrived. He loved the music but wasn’t happy with his own lyrics or melodies before he passed it over to Skiba, who was obsessed with the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird as a kid. Skiba drew the military airplane on everything, built model kits, and even as an adult, devoured books on it. Around the time the lyrics came together, “Blackbird” was the nickname for a girl he was dating. ‘She didn’t look like a bird, but she has this sleekness, this sexiness, that I felt just reminded me in some way of that plane.’”
