I’m Coming Out Lyrics
I'm ... comin' ... out
I'm comin'
I'm ... comin' ... out
I'm comin' out
I'm comin' ... out
I'm ... comin' ... out
[Hook]
I'm comin' out
I want the world to know, got to let it show
I'm comin' out
I want the world to know, I got to let it show
[Verse 1]
There's a new me comin' out and I just had to live
And I wanna give, I'm completely positive
I think this time around, I am gonna do it
Like you never knew it, oh, I'll make it through
The time has come for me to break out of this shell
I have to shout that I am comin' out
[Chorus]
I'm comin' out, I want the world to know
I got to let it show (I'm comin')
I'm comin' out
I want the world to know, I got to let it show
I'm comin' out
I want the world to know, I got to let it show
I'm comin' out
I want the world to know, I got to let it show
I've got to show the world all that I wanna be
And all my abilities, there's so much more to me
Somehow I'll have to make them just understand
I got it well in hand and oh how I have planned
I'm spreadin' love, there is no need to fear
And I just feel so good, every time I hear
[Chorus]
I'm comin' out, I want the world to know
I got to let it show
I'm comin' out, I want the world to know
Got to let it show
[Trombone solo: Meco Monardo]
[Outro]
I'm comin' out, I want the world to know
Got to let it show
I'm comin' out, I want the world to know
Got to let it show
I'm comin' out, I want the world to know
Got to let it show
I'm comin' out, I want the world to know
Got to let it show
I'm comin' out, I want the world to know
Got to let it show
I'm comin' out, I want the world to know
Got to let it show
I have to shout that I'm comin' out
I want the world to know
Got to let it show
I'm comin', I'm comin' out
About
After Chic founders Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards saw three drag queens dressed up like Diana Ross at a bar, they wrote “I’m Coming Out” to appeal to Ross' gay following. The song remains an anthem for the LGBT community.
The song became a number-one dance hit, topping Billboard’s Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart first for 3 weeks in August of 1980 and again for two weeks the following month. It also peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #6 on Billboard’s R&B chart. “I’m Coming Out” also performed well overseas.
The track is also well-known for being sampled in The Notorious B.I.G.’s 1997 chart-topper “Mo' Money Mo' Problems”.

“I’m Coming Out” is still one of those [positive and inspirational] messages, whether it’s for gays or whether it’s for women. When we wrote that song, [producer] Nile Rodgers came to me and said, “What do you want to sing about right now?” and I said, “I don’t know. I’m just coming out and everything’s upside down.” And that’s how the songs came about – “Upside Down” and “I’m Coming Out.”
