Eat Yourself Lyrics
If you don't eat yourself, no doubt the pain will instead
You could loan the light, say it all messed up
[Verse 2]
You went south on the train, she wore plastic boots for rain
And you crawl along exhausted
No sense, no reason
[Chorus]
Who will I be when I'm with you again
Silver jet in the sky
You are the pain, got a song, got to sing
For life
[Verse 3]
If you don't eat yourself, no doubt the pain will instead
If you don't eat yourself, you will explode instead
[Verse 4]
So how can I love you so
When I know you don't love me
[?] say it all, get wicked [?]
[Chorus]
Who will I be when I'm with you again
Silver jet in the sky
You are the pain, got a song, got to sing
For life
About
“Eat Yourself” starts with a background static/crackling noise that gives it a very nostalgic, melancholic feeling, but it turns hopeful by the end with an outro comprised purely of bright vocal melodies.

On the compilation album iTunes Originals: Goldfrapp, the duo commented on the recording of the song.
Will Gregory:
“Eat Yourself” was a jam. A lot of stuff comes from both of us jamming, you know, either singing or playing, whatever it is, just to kind of make something happen. With “Eat Yourself” a lot of the vocal parts were just what happened one day in about five minutes, very spontaneous, and I think we liked that. Anything that happens spontaneously and sounds good is always very sort of special, isn’t it?"
Alison Goldfrapp:
Yeah, you wanna try and keep the performance of something, y'know? But I did write a bunch of lyrics for that and then I ended up not really singing… hardly any of them in fact. There are three lines that are really kind of oddball, I think…
But I was going pretty crazy at the time, so I thought I was either gonna eat myself or explode, one or the other (laughs)."
In spite of that, piecing together bits of live performances gives us a clearer idea of what the lyrics are, or at least what they have become afterwards.
The duo told RemixMag:
Will:
We used the Optigan on ‘Eat Yourself’. It was made in the ‘70s, so it comes with this built-in crackling sound, and it was a nice way to initiate the material we used on the album."
Alison:
And it had this old woody and folksy guitar sound with a very rustic feel. I did this little scat over the music, and it definitely sounded nice and interesting."
