Genius Annotation

“Codeine Dreaming” marks the first collaboration between Kodak Black and Lil Wayne. It first appeared on the deluxe version of Kodak’s 2017 mixtape Project Baby 2 and then on his 2018 mixtape Heart Break Kodak.

The collaboration was a surprise to fans and media since Kodak and Wayne had previously taken shots at each other. In an interview with the New York Times in October 2016, Wayne claimed he didn’t know who Kodak Black even was. Kodak responded by re-tweeting a fans suggestion that he is this generation’s Lil Wayne and challenging Wayne to a boxing match.

The track itself plays around with dreaming and space metaphors. Both refer to highs caused by using codeine and other drugs. Wayne and Kodak also use the latter to wax lyrical about being far beyond their competition. The production also resembles the noises made by a spaceship, creating an ‘out of this world’ atmosphere.
