“AFTERCARE” serves as the introduction to Nessa Barrett’s sophomore album, also titled AFTERCARE. On the 1 minute 34 second intro, Barrett can be found desperately hoping that her partner will stay after sex, and wanting them to make a promise of their commitment to her.
The meaning of “aftercare” that Barrett posted in an Instagram story, comes from the Urban Dictionary definition posted in March, 2021, which defines it simply as “the care after sex”, or the romantic activities after sexual intercourse. Barrett has also defined it herself as “emotional intimacy after sex”. Lyrics from the track were teased in letters sent to fans, and an Instagram post, while the first preview of the song was teased in a now deleted album trailer.

‘AFTERCARE’ is like this intro and it was really inspired by trailer music. I feel like the whole project is very cinematic and so I really wanted something that kind of introduces the entire album and gets you excited and takes you into the world of it.
