“Colleen” is an instrumental track recorded by Prince on January 15, 1982 at Sunset Studios in Hollywood, CA.. The number was recorded in the midst of sessions for The Time’s debut album What Time is It?, although it’s unclear if the composition was intended for the album. It remained unreleased until it was included on the 1999: Deluxe Edition reissue in 2019.

In the liner notes of that reissue, engineer Peggy McCreary remembered:

Sometimes [Prince] didn’t have a title and he’d just say ‘Write down whatever you want.’ I said ‘Come on, just give me a name. Something.’ He’d say something like, ‘What’s your middle name?‘ ‘Colleen.’ ‘Well then, write that down.’ And that’s where ‘Colleen’ came from."
