Lay Me Down
Producers
Yes, I do, I believe
That one day I will be where I was
Right there, right next to you
And it's hard, the days just seem so dark
The moon, the stars are nothing without you
Your touch, your skin, where do I begin?
No words can explain the way I'm missing you
Deny this emptiness, this hole that I'm inside
These tears, they tell their own story
[Pre-Chorus]
Told me not to cry when you were gone
But the feeling's overwhelming, it's much too strong
[Chorus]
Can I lay by your side, next to you, you
And make sure you're all right?
I'll take care of you
I don't want to be here if I can't be with you tonight
[Verse 2]
I'm reaching out to you
Can you hear my call? (Who's to say you won't hear me?)
This hurt that I've been through
I'm missing you, missing you like crazy
You told me not to cry when you were gone
But the feeling's overwhelming, it's much too strong
[Chorus]
Can I lay by your side, next to you, you
And make sure you're all right?
I'll take care of you
I don't want to be here if I can't be with you tonight
[Bridge]
Lay me down tonight, lay me by your side
Lay me down tonight, lay me by your side
[Outro]
Can I lay by your side, next to you? You
About
“Lay Me Down” was released on Sam’s debut album, In The Lonely Hour, as the lead single from the album. Much of In the Lonely Hour deals with a case of unrequited love Smith suffered when they fell for a straight man, and thus, not interested in their advances. The singer explained during their performance at the O2 Academy in Brixton, London that they wrote “Lay Me Down” after deleting the unresponsive man from their social media account.
Smith explained to MTV News how this was the song that kick-started their music career:
“Disclosure heard ‘Lay Me Down,’ and (after that) it was like a domino effect,” he said. “We wrote ‘Latch’ together, and then Naughty Boy heard ‘Latch’ and we wrote ‘La La La’ together, and then I had a number-one single in the UK.”
The song was re-recorded for a 2015 re-release following Smith’s commercial success.
