Our Song
Producer
I was ridin' shotgun with my hair undone
In the front seat of his car
He's got a one-hand feel on the steering wheel
The other on my heart
I look around, turn the radio down
He says, "Baby, is something wrong?"
I say, "Nothin', I was just thinkin' how we don't have a song"
And he says
[Chorus]
Our song is a slammin' screen door
Sneakin' out late, tappin' on your window
When we're on the phone and you talk real slow
'Cause it's late and your mama don't know
Our song is the way you laugh
The first date, "Man, I didn't kiss her and I should have"
And when I got home, 'fore I said "Amen"
Askin' God if he could play it again
[Verse 2]
I was walking up the front porch steps
After everythin' that day
Had gone all wrong and been trampled on
And lost and thrown away
Got to the hallway, well on my way to my lovin' bed
I almost didn't notice all the roses
And the note that said
Our song is a slammin' screen door
Sneakin' out late, tappin' on your window
When we're on the phone and you talk real slow
'Cause it's late and your mama don't know
Our song is the way you laugh
The first date, "Man, I didn't kiss her and I should have"
And when I got home, 'fore I said "Amen"
Askin' God if he could play it again
[Fiddle Solo]
Da-da-da-da
[Guitar Solo]
[Bridge]
I've heard every album, listened to the radio
Waited for somethin' to come along
That was as good as our song
[Chorus]
'Cause our song is a slammin' screen door
Sneakin' out late, tappin' on his window
When we're on the phone and he talks real slow
'Cause it's late and his mama don't know
Our song is the way he laugh
The first date, "Man, I didn't kiss him and I should have"
And when I got home, 'fore I said "Amen"
Askin' God if he could play it again
Play it again, oh, yeah
Oh-oh, yeah
[Outro]
I was ridin' shotgun with my hair undone
In the front seat of his car
I grabbed a pen and an old napkin
And I wrote down our song
About
Swift solely composed “Our Song” for the talent show of her freshman year in high school.. It’s about Taylor’s first boyfriend, Drew Dunlop. It was included on Taylor Swift due to its popularity with her classmates. However, Swift herself never assumed it would even be on an album.
Taylor talked to The Boot about the story behind the song:
I wrote this song in my freshman year of high school, for my ninth grade talent show. So I was sitting there thinking, “I’ve gotta write a song that’s gonna relate to everyone in the talent show, and it’s gotta be upbeat.” And at that time, I was dating a guy, and we didn’t have a song. So I went ahead and wrote us one, and I played it at the talent show at the end of the year.
The uptempo track is musically driven mainly by banjo and lyrically describes a young couple who use the events in their lives in place of a regular song.

Swift told Great American Country:
I’m so glad this song is a single. When we were picking songs for the album, I stood by this one and made sure it got recorded. I just knew there was something about it. Like ‘Tim McGraw,’ the song was finished in, like, 20 minutes. I wrote it about this guy I was dating, and how we didn’t have a song. So I went ahead and wrote us one. I think there’s just some sort of magic in the way the track sounds like it’s bouncing, almost!
As documented by fans on Fanpop, Swift said the following on her since-updated website:
I just sat down one day with my guitar and got in a groove, and went with it. I like to write about how music affects people, and this was fun to write because it’s about a couple who DOESN’T have a song. I like the banjo and you really can’t go wrong with banjo. I wanted it to be last on the album, because the last line of the chorus is `play it again'. Let’s hope people take it as a hint to go ahead and play the album again!
“Our Song” is certified 4x Platinum by the RIAA.
Taylor’s positive message in the lyrics of this song was simply “live in love.”
