Bending Hectic Lyrics
I'm changing down the gears
I'm slamming on the brakes
A vintage soft top from the sixties
[Verse 2]
We're coming to a bend now
Skidding 'round the hairpin
A sheer drop down
The Italian mountainside
[Verse 3]
And time is kind of frozen
As you're gazing at the view
And I swear I'm seeing double
[Pre-Chorus]
No one's gonna bring me down, no
No way and no how
I'm letting go of the wheel
It might be as well
It might be as well
[Chorus]
I've got these slings
I've got these arrows
I'll force myself to
I've got these slings
I've got these arrows
I'll forcе myself to
Turn, turn
The ground is coming for me now
Wе've gone over the edge
If you've got something to say
Say it now
[Pre-Chorus]
No one's gonna bring me down, no
No way and no how
I'm letting go of the wheel
[Chorus]
Despite these slings
Despite these arrows
I'll force myself to
Despite these slings
Despite these arrows
I'll force myself to
Turn, turn
[Outro]
Turn
Turn
Turn
Turn
About
The Smile debuted “Bending Hectic” at the Montreux Jazz Festival on July 12, 2022, and have continued to include it on setlists since. The band released the song as a standalone single almost one year later, before eventually including it on Wall of Eyes in 2024.
At just over eight minutes in length, “Bending Hectic” is The Smile’s longest song. Jonny Greenwood’s delicate guitar-picking and Tom Skinner’s fluttering percussion give the first part of the song a dreamy yet uncertain atmosphere, before chromatic, cascading strings take to song into an explosive finale. True to its title, Jonny Greenwood is heard “bending” his guitar strings throughout the song.
The lyrics describe a feeling of suspended time during a car accident. It’s not the first time this theme has cropped up in Thom Yorke’s lyrics, as Radiohead’s “Airbag” and “Killer Cars” also deal with automotive disasters.
