He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother
Featuring
He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother Lyrics
That leads us to who knows where, who knows where
But I'm strong, strong enough to carry him
He ain't heavy - he's my brother
So on we go, his welfare is of my concern
No burden is he to bear, we'll get there
For I know he would not encumber me
He ain't heavy - he's my brother
If I'm laden, laden at all, and I'm laden with sadness
That everyone's heart isn't filled with gladness of love for one another
It's a long long road from which there is no return
While we're on the way to there, why not share
And the load, it doesn't weigh me down at all
He ain't heavy - he's my brother
He ain't heavy - he's my brother, he's my brother, he's my brother
About
A cover of the song written by American duo Bobby Scott and Bob Russell, made famous by The Hollies. It was recorded in the wake of a landmark verdict by an independent inquiry into the Hillsborough disaster, which concluded that no Liverpool supporters were responsible for the ninety-five crush deaths that occurred during an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, on 15 April 1989. Among the voices in this recording are two original members of The Hollies (Robert Elliott and Tony Hicks) and famous Liverpool musicians including Gerry Marsden (Gerry and the Pacemakers), Holly Johnson (Frankie Goes To Hollywood), Dave McCabe (Zutons) and Rebecca Ferguson (X Factor 2010).
This cover was released as a single in December 2012 and became the year’s Christmas number one. It also had the lowest-selling sales total for a UK number one at Christmas for eight years. Proceeds went to various charities associated with the Hillsborough disaster.
