California is the seventh full-length album by blink-182, released on July 1, 2016. The album represented a number of firsts for the band, including:
The album’s lead single, “Bored To Death” was released on April 27, 2016 along with the album’s title, artwork, and pre-orders.
The deluxe edition of the album added 12 more tracks to the 16 present on the regular album, starting from “Parking Lot.”
Feldmann explained why Blink-182 titled the album after the song “California”.
To name the album after that – Mark had a bunch of classic joke-y titles, OBGYN Kenobi, Nude Erection, One Direction, taking a stab at the boy band thing – he had a bunch of ideas that were great but ultimately [with] ‘Built This Pool,’ ‘Brohemian Rhapsody,’ there are joke-y moments but to sell the record short wouldn’t be fair. The record wasn’t No Future but it also wasn’t OBGYN Kenobi, ‘California’ summed the record up.
Skiba also said:
All the artwork and title came at the final hour. It was definitely the most difficult aspect of the record because we had so much great stuff to choose from once D Face (the cover designer) got on board. It just fit with the theme of the record. California means so many different things to so many different people so it works in that people can make up their own mind as to what it means. It’s where all three of us live and we’re proud and thankful for where we live and how we make a living there. It has a romance to it for us so I hope that resonates with the nice people that buy the record and hopefully dig it.
California peaked at number one on the Billboard 200 dethroning Drake’s Views and holding that spot for a week. The album stayed on the charts for 24 weeks.
