Shelling Pages

Introduction:

Shelling pages has been a common phenomenon at most lyric websites and has recently become a norm here on Genius as well. Shelling does provide some necessary benefits such as coveted SEO power. However, with the current system of shelling pages there are also problems which have arose, namely issues with uniformity and transcription credit.

The Problem:

As things stand now, users must individually create shells, some are as non-descriptive as “Lyrics coming soon!” others are very in depth, such as “Lyrics to Justin Bieber’s collaboration with Halsey, "The Feeling,” will be available when his album, Purpose releases on November 13th, 2015". In either case there is a huge discrepancy to the manner in which this content is made.

Furthermore, transcribers have continually asked for tools to help facilitate their efforts, as well as methods for incentives. There is empirical evidence as well as anecdotal ones to the method in which shelling effects credit. Unfortunately, because no IQ is directly given for transcription, credit is currently one of the only manners in which transcribers are rewarded within the website.

The Solution:

Although I believe it should be tech’s priority to attempt to remedy these issues, particularly attending to past errors, I am aware there is other pressing business to attend to. Additionally, Genius is a website built on efficiency and consistency, as such shelling techniques must be addressed. While there is currently guides on how to shell properly, I believe this is one part of the website which would be better done as an automated process.

I propose that users be able to click a “Shell Page” button when adding a new song to Genius. They will still be asked to enter at minimum a tag, artist name, and song name in order to make the page. Using an automated template, the system will create the shell based on this information, looking as such:

The user will no longer need to input the text themselves, but rather it will be created based on language developed by staff. Rather it will be a “fill in the blank type approach” which has room for artist name, song name, album name, and release date. In example, if a user only enters the minimum information (artist name and song name) the system will create something to this effect:

“Lyrics to [blank]’s song "[blank]" are not currently available. Genius is diligently working on expanding our archive, please check back soon for more updates! If you have any suggestions, please leave a comment below, or to input the lyrics directly click "Edit Lyrics."”

and if they enter an album name:

“Lyrics to [blank]’s song "[blank]" from the album [blank] are not currently available. Genius is diligently working on expanding our archive, please check back soon for more updates! If you have any suggestions, please leave a comment below, or to input the lyrics directly click "Edit Lyrics."”

and if they enter the release date:

“Lyrics to [blank]’s song "[blank]" will be available on [blank]. Genius is diligently working on expanding our archive, please check back soon for more updates! If you have any suggestions, please leave a comment below, or to input the lyrics directly click "Edit Lyrics."”

and if they enter all information:

“Lyrics to [blank] ’s song ”[blank]“ from the album [blank] will be available on [blank]. Genius is diligently working on expanding our archive, please check back soon for more updates! If you have any suggestions, please leave a comment below, or to input the lyrics directly click "Edit Lyrics."”

So forth…

In addition, I propose that a shell be attributed to no user, similar to old songs, such as this one or that Genius comes up as the transcriber. Upon editing the lyrics, however, the page will become the property of whatever user has added said lyrics – whether that be the entire song, or a snippet (any user abusing this system will be liable in a similar manner to any abuse of power).

Once this occurs, transcription credit is allocated using the current algorithm. Thus, this will create a methodical system of shelling, which is conducive to the user experience, and will maintain an even playing field among transcribers attempting to provide their best services for Genius. I understand that this will take quite some labour but if we are to continue shelling in the future, we must take care to address it with the same quality of standards as our other work.

Thank you!

i understand that shelling is good for views but its the most annoying thing ever

  1. ppl put up pages for remixes that aren’t out yet and get the page cuz they copy paste in the original lyrics then delete them (everyone in this thread has done it including me)

  2. we dont know who gets to the page first when the song comes it, turns into a huge cluster f

Dope idea!

Or maybe transcribers or some other well defined subset of users.

@nightpool@streetlights and I have long had a dream of a Google Doc type template. In our world, whoever creates a page has access to a song, as well as anyone with the transcriber role. At the same time, there is a live stream feed so that anyone may make suggestions in real time. Any transcriber at any time may give access to anyone.

This locked feature ends after one hour. This is so that the transcription team can ensure the utmost efficiency when first creating lyrics (we would not want someone malicious editing before we’ve laid the ground work). Upon this time the “Google Doc” is open to all.

Of course this is just one iteration of the idea, but this is one of the reasons I’ve pushed so hard for the role, as it allows us to expand in even more innovative ways in the future.

@nightpool that would be awesome, but like you said I think it would be best if the pool for who can do that is limited. For one thing, having a bunch of people on the page no matter what rank or how the system is set up would be strange and cause conflict. Probably be best for just one person transcribing and editing live, maybe with a sort of page interaction (even if just through suggestions) to incorporate other people’s help.

@Barrk makes a great point about things like remixes. There are several practices that we all use because if you don’t use them you risk someone swooping in behind you for credit. Shelling is horribad at the moment, and honestly so is the way we handle snippet releases and such. I do think it is a good practice to stay within the guidelines for transcribing and add asterisks to pages that aren’t fully released yet (pretty sure that was @dalmo’s idea).

Just a reminder: This tackles a minor part of the major transcription credit problem at the moment. People respond to incentives. We have created a system where people can look like they did 10% of the work of putting a song up by repeating hooks or creating a shell page. While this could help eliminate some of those problems up front – we need help making a system that incentivises people to make perfect song pages instead of one that incentivises users to working the system so they have their name show up on the page.

just got 30% of this page for copy pasting the hook
