The next Ryder Cup takes place in 2025 when Team USA will be hoping to avenge a heavy defeat at the hands of Europe in Rome.
Rory McIlroy believes winning an away Ryder Cup is one of the biggest achievements in golf and Europe will be confident of doing so in 2025 having run out winners by five points at the 2023 event.
But the USA will have home advantage on their side and that is proving to be key in Ryder Cups, with eight of the last nine contests being won by the hosts, the exception being Europe’s 2012 victory in the “Miracle at Medinah”.
When is the 2025 Ryder Cup?
The 45th Ryder Cup takes place from Friday 26 to Sunday 28 September 2025.
Ryder Cup 2025 location
It is USA’s turn to host the Ryder Cup in 2025 and the event will be held at Bethpage Black on Long Island, New York state.
This will be just the second time that New York has hosted the Ryder Cup after Oak Hill Country Club in 1995, where Europe ran out 14.5-13.5 winners.

Captains
Europe’s victorious Ryder Cup 2023 stars urged Luke Donald to remain as captain after he masterminded victory in Rome.
While Tony Jacklin and Bernard Gallacher led the side on multiple occasions, it has been common practice since 1997 for the captain to only get one bite of the cherry, even if they spearheaded record victories.
However, Donald’s players made it clear they would like the former world No 1 to break the mould as they chanted “two more years” while he gave a television interview in the aftermath of the five-point victory in 2023.
And Donald has admitted he is open to the possibility, saying in the wake of victory in Rome: “I’ll obviously consider it.”
Following their defection to LIV Golf, a long line of European Ryder Cup stalwarts – including Ian Poulter, Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood and Henrik Stenson – appear to have ruled themselves out of the captaincy.
Another option would be Justin Rose, the oldest player in Rome, although he is more likely to be a contender for the next Ryder Cup on home soil at Adare Manor in 2027. After claiming 1.5 points in 2023, the 43-year-old may also feel he has another event in him as a player.
Francesco Molinari, a star in Europe’s 2018 victory in Paris and a vice-captain in 2023, is another contender.
Tiger Woods is the early frontrunner for the Americans, although his lack of involvement in Rome would appear to go against the US team’s succession strategy put in place after the debacle of 2014.
Stewart Cink, one of Zach Johnson’s vice-captains in 2023, is another contender, as is Matt Kuchar, who played in four Ryder Cups as a player and was a vice-captain in 2018.

How will Europe shape up in 2025?
The dust had barely settled on Europe’s Ryder Cup victory over the US before Rory McIlroy set his sights on New York and winning the 2025 edition in hostile territory.
After suffering a chastening 19-9 defeat at Whistling Straits in 2021, Europe restored their pride with a 16.5 to 11.5 win at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, leaving the US without a win on European soil since 1993.
Europe’s defeat in 2021 left McIlroy in tears and the Northern Irishman shed more in Rome, though this time for happier reasons. And he predicted more joy for Europe at Bethpage Black.
“So I’ve said this for the last probably six or seven years to anyone that will listen,” McIlroy said. “I think one of the biggest accomplishments in golf right now is winning an away Ryder Cup.
“And that’s what we’re going to do at Bethpage.”
Europe last won the event in the United States in 2012 when they emerged with a 14.5 to 13.5 win in Medinah after fighting back from 10-4 down.
McIlroy paid tribute to the young guns in Europe’s 2023 team and said they had a bright future in the biennial team competition.
“I know I don’t have that many left,” the 34-year-old said.
“To see guys like Ludvig [Aberg] come in here and be an absolute stud and take everything in stride, I wish I was in his position again, looking forward to playing in 15 or 20 Ryder Cups or whatever it is he’s going to play in.
“But all the rookies that came in this year, everything, they have been absolutely amazing, and I’m just so proud to be a part of this team. It is, it’s very, very meaningful.”

As of October 2023
Donald said they would take the fight to the Americans in 2025.
“Not many people gave us a chance after Whistling Straits. We were big underdogs. We started to show some form in the last six months, and I couldn’t be happier with the team I got,” Donald said.
“I think these guys will be around for a long time, and we’re going to put up a great fight in two years’ time.”
