An airport with no shops or decent restaurants, and long queues, is enough to put anyone in a bad mood at the start of their holiday.
After all, the trip begins when you step foot in the airport terminal and head straight to the Wetherspoons for a pre-flight drink.
To ensure you get off to a good start on your holiday, the best airport terminals in the UK have been revealed – and they aren’t what you’d expect.
London airports like Heathrow and Gatwick ranked nowhere near the top, with an airport in the north taking the crown.
Here is what you need to know
Where is the best airport terminal in the UK?
The best UK airport terminal is… Liverpool John Lennon.
Luggage storage company, Bounce, analysed data from Which? on queues in each airport terminal, when it comes to the check-in desk, bag drop, security and passport control.
It also analysed the efficiency of baggage reclaim, available seating, number of staff, the range of shops and their prices, and how many toilets there were.
All of these factors were given a score out of five, which were then totted up to an overall score out of 10. Lastly, a customer satisfaction score was given for each terminal.
With an overall score of 7.71 out of 10, the Scouse airport took the crown, along with an 82% customer satisfaction score.

It received high scores when it came to queues, with five out of five meaning there was minimal queuing time. Check-in queues scored five, bag drop queues scored four, security queues scored five and passport control scored four.
It scored excellently for baggage reclaim efficiency, staff and toilets, but it’s scores for seating, and range of shops and prices were a little more average at three out of five.
Shops available include bookstores, souvenir shops, and clothing, before and after security control. There are bars, restaurants, and cafes, including UK favourites like Subway and Wetherspoons and airport classics like the Food Village, Daytripper Bar, and Go Pizza.
From Liverpool John Lennon you can fly direct to 60 destinations and to more than 150 destinations in total – some with a connecting flight in Frankfurt.
Destinations include: Tenerife, Ibiza, Rome, Budapest, Heraklion, Madrid, Porto, Amsterdam and Paris.
Coming in second is another lesser-used airport: Southampton, which scored 7.24 out of 10.
It received a slightly lower customer satisfaction score at 77% but it scored exactly the same on average as Liverpool John Lennon when it came to queues. You won’t miss your flight if they can help it.
If you look at the queue times, it actually beat Liverpool by a matter of seconds, with just a nine-minute wait time.
The only other area in which the airport scored less than Liverpool was the range of shops it has on offer. However, you still have the essentials from World Duty Free, Olive Tree and Olive Cafe Bar, WHSmith, and Costa Coffee.
Back in 2019, Southampton was presented the Airport of the Year award by the European Regional Airlines Association for services to the local community and reducing their carbon footprint.
Third on the list is Bournemouth with an overall ranking of 6.81 out of 10.
It received a customer score of 75%, although it’s queuing time began to get a little long – particularly at passport control.
It also had a similarly limited range of shops as Southampton but otherwise it scored well across the board.
From Bournemouth, you can fly to destinations like Rhodes, Zante, Venice, Lapland, Edinburgh, Crete, Croatia and Agadir.
The first, and one of only two, London airport terminals to rank in the top 10 is London City at number four.
It received a higher customer satisfaction score than both Southampton and Bournemouth at 78%, with excellent queuing times, although it’s lack of toilets was its downfall.
With an overall score of 6.69 out of 10, it narrowly missed out on the top three.
Within an interesting collection of destinations, London City can fly you to: Antwerp, Barcelona, Belfast, Chambery, Berlin, Bergerac, Geneva, Guernsey, Salzburg and San Sebastian.
