Doctors fans think they’ve ‘worked out’ how the final ever episode will end – and it’s tragic.
The last edition of the daytime medical soap, which has run for an incredible 24 years, will air next Thursday following its axing last year.
At the time, a statement said that: ‘We have taken the very difficult decision to bring daytime drama Doctors to an end after 23 years.
‘With super inflation in drama production, the cost of the programme has increased significantly, and further investment is also now required to refurbish the site where the show is made, or to relocate it to another home. With a flat licence-fee, the BBC’s funding challenges mean we have to make tough choices in order to deliver greater value to audiences.
‘We remain fully committed to the West Midlands and all of the funding for Doctors will be reinvested into new programming in the region. We would like to thank all the Doctors cast and crew who have been involved in the show since 2000.’
One Day Like This, which is the title of the episode, will see Rob Hollins (Chris Walker) become worried when Ruhma Carter (Bharti Patel) lands herself in hot water, Graham Elton (Alex Avery) has become a partner at the surgery and all is lost, while Scarlett Kiernan’s (Kia Pegg in no mood to celebrate her birthday.
With such scarce details, fans have started to speculate online how the show could bow out.
‘I’m sure Graham be the catalyst that brings down The Mill and a way to end the programme’ said one viewer.
Another added: ‘Will Graham’s homophobia have the Mill closed down? Just a few weeks to go now.’
How other famous soap operas bowed out
- Neighbours (2022): A number of locals, past and present, gathered for Toadie Rebecchi and Melanie Pearson’s wedding party on Ramsay Street as a balloon burst, showering them in confetti. The show was later revived.
- Holby City (2022): Show legend Jac Naylor was killed off, but life continued at the hospital to facilitate the continuation of parent show Casualty.
- Waterloo Road (2015): Teachers and students celebrated as the school was saved from merging with nearby Havelock High. The show was later revived.
- Brookside (2003): The Close was sold up to a company, with all the residents leaving. Jimmy Corkhill trashed the houses before he left.
- Take the High Road (2003): Mairi McNeil and Lachie McIvor were married as the residents filed out of the church to the sound of bagpipes.
- Eldorado (1993): Marcus Tandy sailed off into the sunset with Pilar Moreno after an attempt on his life.
Some even think that the famous Mill Health Centre could be at risk of closure.
‘The Mill Health Centre is going to be shut down to finish the series once and for all. End of an era’ speculated one.
Earlier in the year, stars Dido Miles and Ross McLaren spoke about what fans could expect.
