Chris Black has returned to the Strategist with a monthly column to answer all of your burning questions — from super-specific style predicaments and workout and tennis recs to foolproof host-gift ideas that will get you invited back to the beach house.
You’ve written before about gifting “micro-luxuries.” What are some current ones you like?
Micro-luxuries are small, beautiful, well-made, and often useful items that make your life infinitely better for a relatively small amount of money. It can be anything, but let me lay out some prime examples so you get the hang of it. These also work great as gifts.
I love Blistex as much as the next beauty influencer, but the Hermès lip balm epitomizes micro luxury. The packaging and design are perfect, and it keeps your lips moisturized. I know you guys will kill me for the price (please look at the question before commenting), but it’s refillable!
I discovered these a few years ago at the Buly store in Paris and have given them as gifts several times since. Of course, you can use them to light a candle, but I like to keep them in my suitcase to ensure every hotel room smells precisely how I want it to.
[Editor’s note: Officine Universelle Buly lists its price in Euro. The USD price shown is an approximation.]
I hope you buy Marvis toothpaste (Ginger Mint is a sleeper), but now it’s time to look at a new toothbrush that looks nice on the sink. No plastic, no ugly bright colors, and definitely nothing electric. This natural-bristle toothbrush from NYC mainstay C.O. Bigelow is made from a beautiful tortoise, setting it far above the drugstore options.
If you enjoy playing cards, why not elevate your tattered Bicycle set before your next Spades game? Celine offers a two-deck set (black and white) with a lovely gold finish.
Winter is here, and nothing is more luxurious for around the house than a thick pair of cashmere socks. The Elder Statesman does a fantastic version in several colors. I am partial to navy, but olive and sunshine are close contenders.
Please share your thoughts on warm shoes for snow and slush that aren’t ugly.
Technical footwear that looks good and protects the foot is always in short supply, but having wet socks isn’t an option.
I just got these and cannot believe how great they are. Seamless and waterproof, this trail-running shoe is made from Bio-Dyneema (sounds serious), which means light and strong. The sole is the hero: It’s a heavy-duty custom Vibram sole that will prevent slipping, the perfect option for inclement weather. It’s the ideal non-boot option. Snow tires for your feet!
These are the best Salomons on the market. They are fully waterproof and zip up the front to protect your foot. They also have a solid and serious sole that will prevent slippage no matter what terrain you are traversing. If you live in Canada, the Northeast, or Alaska, you need a pair of these in your closet.
ROA is the coolest independent boot-maker on the market. The Andreas is its OG model; they are substantial, heavy-duty, and water resistant, and they have a tonal lacing system. Crafted from black suede, they look great for commuting in the city but will work well in any condition.
Nike isn’t my go-to for boots, but these are classics. Tough, light, and made from GORE-TEX, these feature padded ankles, metal eye stays and lacing clasps, and reflective details.
Winter hats that are not streetwear brands?
I wore a great Stussy Sport beanie in New York City just today, but I understand your plight. It’s hard to avoid streetwear when it comes to winter head-covering. Please see below if you retired your dusty Carhartt beanie and need something warm and plain.
Doesn’t get more simple than this. Made from insulating wool, this beanie features chunky ribbed stitching. Logo free!
Thankfully, the mohair trend has died down, making this great beanie from Auralee a perfect choice. Knitted in Japan with a ribbed cuff, it comes in two great colors: jade if you’re feeling festive and black if you want to stay stealthy.
This is the shape that started it all! Based on the original version the military wore beginning in the 1800s, this watch cap is made in the USA and will keep you warm. So well priced, buy every color for some variety.
Cable knit is not just for sweaters. Howlin’ comes through with a supersoft made-in-Scotland beanie with a unique cable-knit pattern in a perfect neutral shade of cream.
