If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what famous people add to their carts. Not the JAR brooch and Louis XV chair, but the hand sanitizer and the electric toothbrush. We asked Bergdorf Goodman women’s-fashion director and senior vice-president Linda Fargo, whose shop Linda’s at Bergdorf Goodman opens May 1 at the Fifth Avenue store, which items she can’t live without.
I’m a tea girl — not a coffee girl — and I’m very particular about what tea I drink at what time of year, how strong it is, whether I add honey or sugar or agave, whole milk or not. But for summer, my favorite is this Casablanca tea. It’s very transporting because it’s got mint and bergamot, and is delicious hot or cold (to make iced tea, I brew it hot and then just chill it). We’re going to serve it at the opening of the pop-up.
The best. I don’t know how much more to describe it. It’s a Spanish line that has natural ingredients, but it’s not a Tata Harper superorganic thing. I’m at that age where my skin is starting to mean everything. I’ve always taken care of my skin, and have used moisturizer since I was probably 11 years old, but — and I’ve heard this from other women — I don’t want to say I look different necessarily, but I feel great. I trust my skin to this product.
To me, it’s the best of the coconut waters. It’s best for the morning after. Actually, I’d recommend it for the night before and the morning after. It’s great with tequila, too. I’m going to sound like an alcoholic. I learned about this coconut water from Naeem Khan, who’s like the ultimate exotic mixologist. You go over, and he says, “Let me mix you something,” and he’s crushing kumquats and lychees — he turned me onto Mojo. I’ll have it in the mornings when I take my vitamins, too.
Everybody who knows me knows I’m a morning-noon-and-night red-lipstick girl. I consider myself a connoisseur. I’m very picky about the exact hue of red — not too orange, not too blue, not too brown. To me, this is one of the only true reds. It’s the perfect formula, too, because it’s not too dry or too soft or too runny. I love a red lip because it’s a bit vintage and powerful. It’s the symbol of love and lust and blood. I’ve tried them all. I’ve got drawers of discards. This is the one. I’m actually even developing my own with Le Métier de Beauté, and it’s going to be called “Love.”
A classic for summer. There are just a few fragrances in the world that are forever. Guerlain’s Vetiver or Annick Goutal’s Eau d’Hadrien or Eau d’Orange Verte. They’re all kinds of an unpredictable mix, and plus, I love the packaging and bottle of the Hermès. I also love all of the bath components and lotions. I think it’s because it transports me to a vacation I had in Turkey, where I stayed at this interesting boutique. All the products there were Hermès Eau d’Orange Verte, so I associate it with that.
As you can tell, I like a wardrobe composed of classics. A quality, white poplin shirt just makes you look awake. I love classics with a twist, though. Johanna Ortiz takes this high-quality men’s shirting and makes it look like it’s falling off the shoulder. One arm looks rolled up and gathered. I just love white shirts on women because it’s a bit of tomboyishness or cool androgyny.
When you see a moth the way Joseph Scheer shoots them, up close, they look like a Fendi fur coat. They look like intarsia mad-color mixes, fully textured and furry. He travels all around the world to exotic places with certain cameras, and gets these great big blowups with a moth, not as a moth, but fully transformed. Anyone who knows me knows I love things from the natural world, too — corals, shells, raffia, branches.
