LIBERTY STILL TRYING TO AVOID ROAD-KILL

The Liberty won their second straight game on Sunday over Indiana, but Vickie Johnson still wasn’t content.

“This was a good game,” Johnson said after the team restored its winning record at 9-8. “But we want to get back to playing at a level that will get us to a championship, and we haven’t done that.”

That’s because the Liberty, 8-3 at the Garden, have gone just 1-5 on the road this season. Now would be a good time for them to turn that around.

The Liberty will visit the Seattle Storm (11-9) today – the first of four consecutive road games.

“We take a lot of pride in how we play at home and how tough we make it to play here,” Johnson said. “We’ve got to realize that other teams feel the same way and that we have to play even harder when we go on the road.”

Head coach Richie Adubato hopes he sees that extra effort this afternoon.

“This is a big trip for us,” Adubato said of the West Coast swing. “We want to win them all, but that usually doesn’t happen. So we’re looking to go .500.”

It’s already been a rough week for Seattle’s Sue Bird. The former Christ the King and UConn star aggravated her injured left knee on Sunday and was limited to just three minutes in the Storm’s loss at Minnesota. She is expected to start today. Bird also got some unwanted publicity on Monday, when she canceled a bet with a Seattle sports talk-show host in which she had agreed to let him spank her if she didn’t end the season with at least a 2:1 assists-to-turnovers ratio. Had she won the wager, the male host was to purchase Storm season tickets.
