MIKE HIKES TRASH FINES

Mayor Bloomberg yesterday signed into law a bill that dramatically hikes fines for New Yorkers who drop their household trash into street litter cans.

“We do have a problem that people come and dump their household waste, fill up the basket, and anybody who starts adding stuff on top, it gets knocked off,” the mayor said.

Under the new law, first-time offenders will face fines of up to $300. It had been $25. Repeat offenders could be slapped with fines of up to $400.

Additionally, enforcement agents will ticket homes if traceable trash is found in bags in the cans.
