Euro ‘08: Day 13

Day 13 of the Euros opens with the tournament’s first of four quarterfinal clashes and it’s a doozy as Portugal plays Germany at 2:30 p.m. ET.

The Germans, pre-tournament favorities who finished Group B runners-up due to a humiliating 2-1 loss to Croatia, have played poorly, while Portugal progressed to the quarterfinals with comparative ease, winning their first two contests in Group A.

Adding to their problems, Germany will be without coach Joachim Loew, who has been banned by UEFA after he was ejected in Monday’s match against Austria.

History shows that Germany are superior to Portugal. Germany have had the better of the 15 meetings between these two sides with seven victories compared to Portugal’s three. The teams have tied five times.

Both teams last met at the 2006 World Cup in the third place game, which Germany won, 3-1.
