Fire damages Magic Mountain roller coaster in California

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. — A fire on the recently closed Colossus ride at Southern California’s Magic Mountain park has collapsed part of the famous wooden roller coaster but there are no reports of injuries.

Los Angeles County firefighters were called to the park at around 1:30 p.m. Monday by a report of a structure fire.

It turned out to be the giant wooden roller coaster. Flames collapsed one crest of the coaster as fire hoses trained streams of water on it.

Colossus was the world’s tallest and fastest roller coaster when it opened in 1978, at 125 feet tall and reaching speeds of 62 mph.

It closed last month so the park north of Los Angeles can convert it into a hybrid wood and steel coaster.
