Cyclist killed after boat detaches from truck

A 21-year-old bicyclist was killed and another critically injured after the pair was struck Monday by a boat that detached from a pickup truck on Staten Island, police said.

The victim, identified by police as Alexa Cioffi, and another woman,22, were riding on Hylan Boulevard and Redgrave Avenue near Great Kills Park at 5:15 p.m. when the latch of a Toyota Tundra unhinged and the boat came loose in front of them, cops said.

Police say they were not wearing helmets and it wasn’t immediately clear if the women knew each other.

The pickup driver was trying to get around them by crossing from the right lane to the center lane when the boat suddenly detached, cops said.

Both women were unconscious and unresponsive at the scene, authorities said.

Cioffi was pronounced dead at Staten Island University Hospital, officials said. The 22-year-old is listed in critical condition at the same hospital.

Cioffi wrote on Facebook that she was in a relationship with Michael Aspromonte, who expressed his sorrow on the site Tuesday morning.

“My baby, my love, in (sic) now the Angel that looks down on me…Rest easy Alexa, I will always love you… together forever,” he wrote in a post containing a drawing of a smiling angel above a teary-eyed bearded man.

He earlier posted a photo of himself and Cioffi – she with red lipstick and he with the mark of a kiss on the cheek.
The NYPD Collision Investigation Squad is investigating the accident.

The driver remained at the scene and police did not believe there was any immediate signs of criminality.
