ESPN gives Bill Walton four hours to do his wacky, weed-promoting best

Throw the weed knowledge down, big man!

Basketball Hall of Famer and renowned Deadhead and all-around cultural treasure Bill Walton was a part of the “ESPN Voices” set for the College Football Playoff Megacast that aired across ESPN networks during Monday night’s epic national title game.

If you flipped over to ESPNU, you saw the 6-foot-11 redhead dressed in full Uncle Sam regalia complete with cartoonish top hat. And if you happened to drop in during halftime, you heard Walton regaling the in-person and television audiences with his thoughts on decriminalizing marijuana.

“Marijuana should not be a Schedule I drug,” he said. “And all of the people who have been in trouble for it for all these years, Obama should just blanket amnesty and move onto the future.”

Someone among the assembled group of Keyshawn Johnson, Marcellus Wiley, Rachel Nichols, Amin Elhassan, Michelle Beadle and Jay Bilas whooped “Par-don!” in approval. When Walton told Beadle to visit his room later, he seemed to mean so they could swap notes on, ahem, natural remedies.

At some point, Walton changed into a tunic and confirmed — really, who thought otherwise? — he believes in aliens and wants to go meet them.
