British PM splits from Trump on Russia sanctions

British Prime Minister Theresa May said the UK strongly supported continuing sanctions against Russia at the White House on Friday — while President Trump said lifting them is still on the table.

“As far as the UK is concerned on sanctions for Russia in relation to their activities in the Ukraine, we have been very clear that we want to see the Minsk agreement fully implemented,” May said during a joint press conference.

“We believe the sanctions should continue until we see that Minsk agreement fully implemented, and we’ve been continuing to argue that inside the European Union,” she said, referring to the agreement among Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany that’s intended to resolve the Ukrainian conflict.

Trump was vague in his reply to questions about lifting sanctions.

“We’ll see what happens as far as the sanctions. Very early, we’ll be talking about that. We look to have a great relationship with all countries ideally. That won’t necessarily happen, unfortunately,” he said.
