On June 14, 2018, New Jersey became the third state in the country after Nevada and Delaware to offer legalized sports betting, almost a month after the Supreme Court overturned the federal ban known as PASPA (The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992). Almost five months later, there now are nine sportsbooks open at casinos and racetracks across the state where one can place bets. There also are eight different betting apps currently taking action.
Now that sports betting is legal in New Jersey, let’s look at how and where you can place bets online or at sportsbooks:
Racetracks
Monmouth Park
Monmouth Park Racetrack opened the state’s first sportsbook on June 14 and spent the past few years investing millions of dollars to convert a cafeteria into the William Hill Race & Sports Bar. The well-reviewed facility has 22 betting windows, more than 50 TVs and hundreds of seats — expansion into the grandstand could increase capacity up to 7,500 — as well as a 75-foot wide, 8-foot tall video board. William Hill also takes live bets on its app.

Meadowlands Racetrack
The closest option to New York, which isn’t expected to legalize its own sports books until 2019, at the earliest. Located a few punts away from MetLife Stadium, the FanDuel Sportsbook opened July 14 with a 5,300-square-foot setup, and has recently expanded into a new sports lounge, which will house 15 cashiers and 65 TVs and remain open until all live U.S. games have concluded.
If you’re traveling without a car, plan on leaving extra time, and make sure you have a parking pass to get on the property. The 160 bus line from Port Authority Bus Terminal is an option, and the Meadowlands Rail Service directly to the stadium opens 3.5 hours before kickoff and ends one hour and the game. FanDuel also takes live bets on its app.

Hotel Casinos
Borgata
Located in Atlantic City’s marina district, the Race & Sports Book is a non-smoking venue, with 10 betting windows and 100 individual seats, each equipped with flat-screen monitors for players. A larger $7 million facility is being planned to replace the temporary sportsbook, which opens daily at 11 a.m. Live betting is available through the playMGM NJ sports betting app.
Ocean Resort Casino
This boardwalk hotel opened June 28 — on the site of the former Revel casino — and built a 7,500-square-foot William Hill sports book in the middle of the casino floor, which offers in-game betting.

Resorts Atlantic City
New Jersey’s first casino hotel opened its DraftKings sportsbook on Aug. 15 and features a 5,000-square-foot area with 12 betting kiosks, five betting windows, a 15-foot video wall and VIP seating with food and bottle service. DraftKings also features a mobile sports app.

Golden Nugget
Another marina district hotel, the Golden Nugget features a sportsbook off the main atrium which is open daily from 10 a.m. to midnight. The book has seating for more than 100 with more than 50 TVs showing live action. The Golden Nugget offers a mobile app but will not take bets on the NBA’s Houston Rockets, owned by the hotel’s Tilman Fertitta.
Bally’s
Located in the Wild Wild West casino, this sports book features 30 stadium lounge chairs and 27 high-top chairs, displaying live games on eight large-screen TVs.

Harrah’s
The marina district sportsbook has 32 stadium lounge chairs, six high-top tables, 18 high-top chairs and shows games on five large screens. Both Harrah’s and Bally’s are owned by Caesars Entertainment, which launched its mobile app in September.

DraftKings Sportsbook app
The fantasy sports site became the first to fully launch a sports betting app on Aug. 6 and offers in-game betting. Bets can be made 24 hours a day, but players must be in New Jersey when placing action.
William Hill mobile betting
This app and website feature in-game wagering, a wide range of parlays, teasers and props, and the ability to buy points on the betting line.
playMGM
Similar to DraftKings, this app is now available for Android and iOS phones.
SugarHouse Sportsbook
This app offers a $250 bonus on the first deposit.
BetStars NJ Sports Betting app
A product of PokerStars gaming, BetStars offered from Sept 13-30 a wager that paid 100/1 odds for any team to win the Super Bowl on a $5 bet.
888 sport
In late October, the Jets signed a sponsorship agreement with the online casino 888 Holdings, which featured signage at MetLife Stadium.
FanDuel Sportsbook
The FanDuel app offers a $500 risk-free bet, offering a refund if you lose your first bet.
