FDNY widow posts poignant photo of war-slain husband with daughters
He was our humble hero, the widow of Marine and FDNY firefighter Christopher Slutman said in a poignant Instagram post Friday.
Shannon Slutman’s post includes a moving black and white photo showing the couple and their three pig-tailed young daughters walking away from the camera. The only color is the red, white and blue of the small American flag in her husband’s pocket.
Staff Sgt. Slutman, a 15-year FDNY vet, was 43 years old when he died in Afghanistan Monday, killed by a roadside bomb near the US base at Bagram Airfield.
The widow wrote:
“The girls and I thank you for the outpouring of love and support. My husband was a humble man and would have downplayed all the “Hero” talk, but to all of us, that is what he was. Chris was passionate about his family as well as being a firefighter and a Marine. He was a lover of the Eagles, Phillies, and Notre Dame Football, an avid reader, and runner. Above all, Chris was a man of integrity and a gentleman in all he did. In honor of Chris, please pay it forward and do something kind for another.”
Slutman’s body returned to US soil on Thursday night.
