Luke Walton outlasted Magic Johnson — by three days.
The Lakers on Friday finally divorced their head coach, as had largely been expected following a messy, playoff-less season in Hollywood.
Walton, who had his well-publicized run-ins with Johnson, lasted three seasons in Lakers-land, extending the now-futile franchise’s streak without postseason ball to six years. The team called it a mutual agreement.
While Walton and Johnson — who surprisingly quit in impromptu fashion Tuesday night — are out, GM Rob Pelinka is expected to stay on board.
“We would like to thank Luke for his dedicated service over the last three years,” Pelinka said in a statement. “We wish Luke and his family the best of luck moving forward.”
The search for Walton’s replacement is already underway, with ESPN reporting former Cavaliers coach and LeBron confidant Ty Lue is a “strong frontfunner.”
Walton, meanwhile, might already have his next gig ready and waiting for him in Sacramento.
