Robbers steal deliveryman’s bike, crash it into parked car
Two doofus robbers swiped a restaurant deliveryman’s food and electric bike in Brooklyn — then promptly crashed the bicycle into a parked car, video shows.
The crooks — among a slew who have pulled off more than 10 similar heists across the city since September, prompting the NYPD to recently issue a warning to deliverymen — attacked a 55-year-old worker around 2:45 p.m. March 28 in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, police said.
The suspects approached the deliveryman in front of a home on 89th Street near Ridge Boulevard, claiming they were the customers who ordered the food he was holding.
One of the suspects then snatched the food, saying he wasn’t going to pay, and simulated a weapon in his pocket. Both men then hopped on the worker’s $1,500 electric bike and headed off.
They didn’t get very far. The clumsy crooks only made it a few feet before crashing the bike into a car and tumbling onto the street. They then got up, and one rode away on the bike, the video shows.
Fewer than 10 hours later, moments after midnight, a 30-year-old deliveryman also had his electric bike swiped during a delivery at a Boynton Avenue residence near Westchester Avenue in the Soundview section of the Bronx.
A video of the robbery, released by police, shows the deliveryman standing with a bag of food in hand as three men casually walked up and took his bike.
“That’s my bike, I’m taking it back,” one of the men said to the delivery guy, according to police.
The delivery man seemed stunned and just watched as the men made a slow getaway, the video shows.
The crook on the bike had some trouble riding it at first and used his feet to roll away, the video shows.
The NYPD reported at least eight other similar robberies of deliverymen in the past six months in various neighborhoods, including the Upper West Side, Greenwich Village and Chelsea in Manhattan.
Some electric bikes retail for around $600, but many can come with a price tag of more than $1,500.
In tweets, cops have warned deliverymen on electric bikes to be extra vigilant and report any suspicious persons.
Five teenagers are still in the wind after targeting delivery workers across Manhattan in October. The bandits are accused of beating up the unsuspecting workers and swiping their food, cash and in some cases, electric bikes.
