Before the Yankees lost their lead and got booed Friday night, a group of protesters drew the ire of Yankee Stadium.
In the bottom of the third inning, some fans unfurled a sign over the second deck in right field that read, “Declare Climate Emergency.” It was met with a smattering of boos as play went on.
Fans in the seats below the sign tried pulling it down, to no avail, before the sign was eventually rolled up, to the delight of the crowd. The owners of the sign appeared to be escorted out of their section.
In April, the Yankees became the first major North American sports team to sign on to the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework, which aimed “to gather sports organizations, teams, athletes, and fans in a concerted effort to raise awareness and action to meet the goals of the Paris [Climate Change] Agreement.” President Trump withdrew the US from the Paris Agreement in 2017.
