The 2020 Screen Actors Guild Awards — the under-appreciated middle child of Hollywood’s awards season — handed out more than a dozen SAG statues to honor movies and television Sunday night at LA’s Shrine Auditorium.
Sandwiched between the Golden Globes and the Oscars, the traditionally host-free SAGs reverted to a no-emcee format after a two-year experiment using hosts — “Will & Grace” star Megan Mullally last year and “The Good Place” actress Kristen Bell in 2018 — for the first time in the organization’s history. (Perhaps carefree Globes host Ricky Gervais wasn’t available?)
But a bevy of presenters — including nominees Scarlett Johansson and Sterling K. Brown — kept the flow moving for the 26th annual shindig, broadcast live on TBS and TNT. The SAGs also took a page from the 2020 Golden Globes menu and served up a plant-based dinner that included a romano bean salad, paellla rice salad and charred harissa-glazed baby carrots, plus wine and Champagne.
Besides the 15 main awards, which are voted on by active members of SAG and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, Leonardo DiCaprio also presented “The Irishman” star Robert De Niro with the 2020 SAG Life Achievement Award for fostering the “finest ideals of the acting profession.”
