Eminem surprises 2020 Oscars with ‘Lose Yourself’ performance from ‘8 Mile’
Mom’s spaghetti made it to the Oscars.
Rapper Eminem made a surprise performance at Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, leaving many guests dancing along and others confused.
“Hamilton” actor Anthony Ramos introduced Lin Manuel Miranda, who then presented a tribute to songs in movies. A highlight reel played of iconic musical moments such as Simple Mind’s “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” from “The Breakfast Club” and Eminem’s song “Lose Yourself” from his 2002 flick “8 Mile.”
Then, Marshall Mathers himself took the stage to sing the song. The 47-year-old was not announced as a scheduled performer for the night.
The rapper did not censor his performance for the audience, but ABC was quick with the bleep button, silencing several phrases of the song. Luckily, the iconic intro “vomit on his sweater already, Mom’s spaghetti” made it in.
The surprise performance shocked many after Mathers famously did not attend the 2003 ceremony to accept his win for Best Original Song for “Lose Yourself.”
“Look, if you had another shot, another opportunity … Thanks for having me @TheAcademy. Sorry it took me 18 years to get here,” he wrote on Twitter, with a video of the song winning an Oscar years ago.
Not everyone was happy with the surprise performance. Ramos, Kelly Marie Tran, Idina Menzel, Billie Eilish and Martin Scorsese seemed confused watching the performance, as seen during the broadcast.
Billy Eichner called out Eminem’s homophobic past online. “Well, you can still sing the word “f - - - - t” a million times and still perform at the Oscars that’s about “diversity.” Mmkay,” he wrote.
