Prosecutors seek independent probe of Kansas City police shooting

Prosecutors in Kansas City have asked the Missouri State Highway Patrol to investigate the police shooting of an unarmed black man in the city.

The request comes after the Kansas City Police Department submitted their findings of an internal probe into the March shooting of Donnie Sanders to the Jackson County prosecutor’s office.

Mike Mansur, a spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office, said an additional investigation was necessary.

“It is clear, I am guessing, why we don’t want people investigating themselves, so we need to make sure we have the best investigation that we can have,” Mansur said.

Sanders was shot after police said he raised his arms “as though he had a weapon” while running away from a traffic stop.

No charges have been filed against the officers involved in the shooting. They’ve also not been identified publicly.
