An emotional Obi Toppin, a Brooklyn native, was thrilled about being picked by the Knicks with the No. 8 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft on Wednesday night.
The 6-foot-9 Toppin was the National Player of the Year in 2020 after a standout season at Dayton. The 22-year-old averaged 20 points and 7.5 rebounds for the Flyers while vaulting into the spotlight and up draft boards.
Many pre-draft prognosticators thought Toppin might be picked higher in the draft, particularly to the Cavaliers at No. 5, but he fell to the Knicks.
Nevertheless, the pick wasn’t met with universal love on Twitter. Stephen A. Smith tried his best to like it.
